Homemade Non-Toxic Grout Cleaners

Regular grout cleaning is important to keep up the new, clean look of the grout and tiles by removing any discolouration and dirt that builds up from everyday use. It’s also important to regularly clean your grout so that you can remove any toxic mould and mildew that has managed to grow, and help prevent it from coming back. There are many grout cleaners available in local supermarkets, but I prefer to use other eco-friendly methods. Here are a few of my recommendations to which grout cleaner is best suited for which job.

clean_tile_and_grout
Light Grout Cleaning

A fairly well ventilated bathroom that is used 1-2 times a day should be able to get away with regular light grout cleaning once a week or so. To do this I recommend simply using an eco-friendly washing up liquid (such as bio-d washing up liquid) and a light cleaning sponge (typically white), or if you have one, an old toothbrush. Paired together, the right cleaning product and right tool should be able to prevent the build up of dirt and grim on the tile and grout surface.

How to Kill and Remove Light Mould from Grout and Tiles

To remove light mould on the grout and tiles, try putting white vinegar neat in a spray bottle and spray it directly onto the mould. It’s best to leave the vinegar as long as you can to completely kill the mould, but if you’re in a rush I suggest leaving it at least 5 minutes before cleaning it off with a toothbrush. You may be left with marks on the grout where the mould has been; if so, try the following solution.

Clean Stained Grout

If your tile grout is not sealed properly, then you will find that the grout can get stained very quickly, and to clean this properly you’ll need a stronger product. Although there is other home made solutions that do a better job, I find the easiest to make at home is a mixture of salt, baking soda and white vinegar as all these products are available in local supermarkets, if not already in your house. Make a paste by adding the ingredients together in a bowl in equal parts (1/3 salt, 1/3 vinegar, and 1/3 baking soda). Apply it to the stained grout and if possible, leave it for sometime on the grout surface. Then simply scrub the stained grout with an old toothbrush and finally rinse with clean water. This is perfect for unsealed grout as this home made cleaning recipe is fairly mild, and shouldn’t damage the unprotected grout.

Store Bought Tile and Grout Cleaners

If non-toxic grout cleaners don’t give you the results you were hoping for then you may chose to try a harsher store bought tile and grout cleaner. If you do, always read the instructions provided by the manufacturer carefully before applying it on the grout, and always wear gloves and protective clothing. Also try in a hidden area first as some can cause coloured grout to fade or damage unsealed grout.

Homemade cleaning products should be preferred because you know what goes into them, and store bought grout cleaners typically contain harsh chemicals (such as bleaching agents) which can cause damage to the grout, and even worse harm pets and children.

Prevent grout discolouration and mould growth

The key to preventing discolouration of the grout is to have it sealed properly, and the key to preventing mould a mildew growth is ventilate, ventilate, ventilate! Using the fan while and after you are in the shower and opening the windows as much as possible will make a huge difference; this may not always be possible in the colder months so try keeping a towel near by, or even better a squeegee to remove any excess water. Also leaving the shower door/curtain open after your shower helps the ventilation. Keeping it dry as quick as possible reduces the opportunity for the mould to grow.

A Friendly Warning

If you are using any new cleaning product, then first try it on any hidden area to test if it causes any damage to the grout. The grout should be washed with water first before you apply any cleaner, so that all the loose debris is washed away. Once the tile has dried, apply the cleaner and scrub it with a toothbrush or cleaning sponge, and then wash it again with water.

Method Bowl Patrol Toilet Cleaner Review

You can buy Method Toilet Cleaner from our natural products online store

Method Bowl Patrol cleaning product

Being part of Method’s cleaning product range, the Eucalyptus Mint Bowl Patrol of course looks fantastic! It’s a really unique bottle shape that looks like it’s been designed to clean the Queen’s toilet and anything less would be an insult to it. The design is not without its disadvantages though; the bottle does take up a fair amount of space (it can’t be neatly hidden under you sink, but perhaps that’s not a bad thing for this product) and it doesn’t quite fit in the hand correctly, not an issue if you have dry hands, but being a professional cleaner often my hands will be a little damp and I fear I’ll one day be fishing this out of someone’s toilet bowl. As this product is non-toxic there is no need for a security lid, instead there is a screw cap, making it nice and simple to use. I’ll explain in a moment why I think this works great on this particular product.

The main cleaning ingredient to combat the dirt appears to be lactic acid (produced from plants). Method claim that this toilet cleaner “removes ring-around-the-rim, deep cleans, deodorises and decalcifies – naturally”. Given plenty of time perhaps they’re right, however I find that toilet cleaners need to work fairly quickly else they’ll get washed away by the next user, which unfortunately it doesn’t. If you’re looking for a green deep toilet cleaning product then keep looking, but if you’re after something to use as a regular toilet cleaner for light dirt then this is more then adequate to do the job.

This product has a eucalyptus mint scent, which undesirably is from a synthetic perfume. I would normally explain how I don’t see the point of perfumes in cleaning products but this is probably the only place that it works really well. The scent lasts for as long as I have been able to leave the product down my toilet and it smells great, even if the rest of the room is a pit, the scent covers it up and makes the toilet smell exactly how a clean, disinfected bathroom should smell. As mentioned above the screw cap has an additional bonus; when you find you are nearing the end of this product try leaving the bottle in the room with the cap unscrewed. This will slowly let out a fresh clean scent all day giving the impression the room has just been deep cleaned by a professional.

There are pros and cons to the actual cleaning solution. It’s fairly thick so thankfully means it wont come flowing out of the top as soon as you turn it to it’s side, however it clumps together too much that you either have to spray some around and then use a brush to evenly cover the whole bowl, or use a lot to ensure you get an even clean, quickly increasing the cost. The light shade of blue is a great choice as it allows you to easily see any areas missed.

When the price of Method’s Bowl Patrol toilet cleaner is compared to other eco-friendly toilet cleaners (~£3 compared to £1.50-£2) it’s a little on the expensive side. Other eco-friendly toilet cleaners can do just as good of a job, however i am yet to find one that has as good of a scent as this which is just where it’s needed. The cleaner is great for light dirt and it has a really great unique design. I am willing to spend the extra money to get a product I can show off to my customers and be happy knowing that when they return home it will be to a clean smelling bathroom, so this is defiantly one green cleaning product that is in my cleaning box.

Health benefits of house plants

If you have ever spent time in my house you’d know that I’m a plant lover. I first started with the odd few but once I got the hang of what I was doing my obsession quickly grew and I now have far too may that I’m running out of space, but for good reasons. Healthy, well kept, indoor plants at home and at the office can bring real health benefits to everyone around them, so should not be overlooked when decorating a room.

Untitled-1
House Plants Clean the Air

Studies on all types of house plants found that the common, easy to buy, plants are some of the most efficient at improving air quality; some able to remove up to 87 percent of air toxins produced from paints, varnishes, dry cleaning fluids, tobacco smoke, in less than a day.

My Top 3 Air Purifying Plants
  1. My favourite has to be one of the most common house plants, the Spider Plant. Good sized Spider Plants can found in pretty much any shop selling indoor house plants so are dead cheap and easy to find. They are easily maintainable, look great when healthy, and do well in low light locations; perfect for any office desk.
  2. Another great plant for cleaning the air is the Mother Fern. It’s a very popular houseplant because it’s easy to care for, thrives in indirect light, and is very attractive.
  3. Due to the tall size, the Ficus family is great for empty spaces around the office and home. They quickly fill a dull corner and for the size of them they are relatively cheap. My favourite in the Ficus family has to be the Ficus Elastica (Rubber Plant). I have owned one just over a year ad it has managed to double in size with minimal sunlight. I have to admit they can be fairly unattractive when compared to pretty much any other house plant, but in my opinion they are the most interesting; they can stand tall and uneventful for weeks, then all of a sudden a tiny leaf sprouts out the top, 1 day later it can be the size of my finger, 3 days later and it can be double the size of my hand! Fantastic for kids to see the growth happening right in front of their eyes.

All these plants are great air cleaners (absorb toxins), good for office desks (aid concentration & creativity), easy to place in large rooms with low light levels, and easy to maintain.

Green Your Office

Although I can’t prove it myself, a quick google will reveal that placing plants in offices have resulted in the rise in productivity of employees, a drop in absenteeism and enhancement in the creativity of employees. Minor health problems like fatigue, headaches, also benefits from the presence of healthy indoor plants.

Plants are also known to have de-stressing effects on the mind. My favourite colour (green) relaxes the mind so when choosing a plant try to get a nice fresh coloured one such as a Spider Plant.

The healthier the plant, the more purifying it will be.

It’s that time again when heating can be on most of the day. Remember to keep your houseplants away from radiators, with an occasional misting to help them remain at full strength. It may be wise to move light loving plants to the brightest spot you have indoors until the spring.

Plants use up oxygen at night and produce CO2

This is something I hear every now and again; “As plants take up the oxygen and produce CO2 at night, aren’t you at risk of fighting for the oxygen in the air?” Although plants do respire (need oxygen) at night, the amount is tiny compared to the availability of oxygen in the home. You’re at a higher risk by sleeping with a partner in the same room then you are by having house plants with you.

Since I can remember I have always had some sort of plant in my bedroom and I have never woken up dead. If I ever do, I give you all permission to say I told you so.

Clean glass to leave a streak free shine

In the old days, people cleaned their windows with water and vinegar, then polished them with old newspapers. You can still do this today, but vinegar will not cut all oil and grease. Using a newspaper to polish the glass can be a little risky too. Given that many are now made with recycled papers, and eco-friendly inks, the results may not be quite what you anticipate and could leave a horrible smear later on.

streak-free-window-cleaning
Here’s what you’ll need
  1. A quality microfibre cloth
  2. Glass polishing cloth
  3. Home made window cleaner
How to clean like a professional window cleaner

Step 1: Damp the microfibre cloth with plain water. If it’s too dry you’ll end up soaking up the entire window cleaner before it’s had a chance to clean the glass.

Step 2: Spray the home made window cleaner onto the glass from approximately 30cm away so that you get a nice even spray.

Step 3: Wipe the glass from top to bottom with the microfibre cloth. Any hard dirt such as grease should start to really show it’s self now; I find using a single finger inside the micofibre cloth is the best way to remove all the small bits of dirt.

Step 4: Finally give the glass a quick wipe over with the glass polishing cloth. This’ll remove any chance of a remaining build up of previous window cleaning chemicals and will ensure you get a great shine every time.

We find this to be the best method to having a streak free, super shiny window, that looks like it’s been cleaned by a professional. After just a few seconds of light work, you’ll be left with nothing but a clean window.

Homemade Window Cleaner with Vinegar & Lemon

Making your own window cleaner is one of the easiest cleaning solutions to make so there’s no reason at all that you can’t make your own cleaner at home and dump the store bought toxic window cleaners!

WindowClean

Many of the glass cleaners are amonia based; although great for cleaning glass, it can be dangerous and in our opinion shouldn’t but used given there is much nicer alternatives. We have experimented with many homemade window cleaners and this is our favorite. At approximately 50p per 500ml bottle, a few minutes to make, and it leaves your windows clean and streak free, i’m sure you’ll agree.

Here’s what you’ll need
  1. sterile spray bottle
  2. lemon essential oil (1 drop)
  3. white vinegar (1/4)
  4. eco-friendly washing up liquid (1 teaspoon)
  5. and warm water (3/4)
How to make the window cleaner

Simply add all the ingredients together into the spray bottle and you’re done. As mentioned this simply takes a few minutes to make and costs less then £1 per bottle. Don’t be concerned with all the glass in your house smelling of vinegar as when it dries the scent completely dissipates. Vinegar is a great cleaning agent and dries quickly, meaning you get a streak free shine.

A common problem for home owners with single glazed windows is light mould growth around the frame. As this window cleaner contains plenty of vinegar (a natural mould killer) you’ll not only be cleaning your windows with this product but also killing the toxic mould around the frame.

Unfortunately, some of the domestic window cleaning products leave a small wax buildup, which vinegar alone can’t remove; this is where the teaspoon of eco-friendly washing up liquid comes in. Paired together, vinegar and a small amount of washing up liquid form a great partnership for cleaning glass.

We use lemon essential oil as it’s one of our favourite scents and it has a natural degreasing power (great for removing hard dirt from windows and glass) and smells great, however you could easily change the lemon oil for a different scent such as eucalyptus oil, great for disinfecting and a lasting clean smell.

Combined with a microfibre cloth this is definetly our favorite window cleaner. It removes almost all dirt with ease, and any it can’t shift, the microfirbre cloth takes it off with little effort.

Quick Tip

As this window cleaner uses only non-toxic eco-friendly chemicals to clean, it can be used for more then cleaning glass. Another use is as an all purpose cleaner. Give it a go and see what you think.

All the items needed to this eco window cleaner can be bought from out natural cleaning products store

Method Pink Grapefruit All Purpose Cleaner Review

Given our love for Method’s products and the increasing success they have had over the last few years it made sense to review one of their cleaning products. Method’s Pink Grapefruit All Purpose Cleaner was one of the first products we chose to try as it’s fairly low price (~£3) with many uses, so if we didn’t like it we knew it’ll only be around for a short time and not sitting under our sink collecting dust.

The Design

As with all Method cleaning products the first thing we noticed was how stylish it looks. It’s pink (though unfortunately because of a dye), the labeling is modern and simple, and the bottle is not the typical shape; it’s perhaps not the best design for usability and appears more focused on being nice on your shelf then nice in your hand, but none the less it does it’s job well enough for minimal use. I like that it’s a larger size bottle then i’m used to; 828ml compared to the normal 500ml.

How Green is it?

In what appears to be a way to increase the products visual appeal, the label is kept fairly simple and as a result the list of ingredients are slightly lacking on the back, however Method have been kind enough to have it easy to find on their website. An absolute must from the green cleaning products that we use is for them to be non-toxic; this all purpose cleaner ticks all the correct boxes and more. It doesn’t contain any nasties such as acids, chlorine, phosphates, etc, so it’s nice and green, but one thing I found when doing a bit of research is that it isn’t 100% hypoallergenic.

Because method contains natural ingredients such as Chinese ginger and chamomile essential oils, it is not 100% hypoallergenic. However, method formulas are particularly mild compared to most common cleaners and will generally not bother those with most types of allergies. If you have a specific allergy and need more information, please contact us directly via phone or email.”

While the pink grapefruit scent is fairly nice, there’s a strange after-scent that wasn’t too appealing and perhaps their french lavender all purpose cleaner would have been a better choice. One thing I do have to say is I’m lost when it comes to prefumes in cleaning products. Although they may smell nice when being used, the only person who will smell them is the cleaner and it’s only momentary as the smell quickly dissipates.

It’s Green, but can it Clean?

We tested this on most surfaces you’d find around your house, such as kitchen surfaces, tables, bathroom surfaces. This product cleans using a different method, rather than chemically degrading the dirt (and your hands) it absorbs the dirt. Given a few moments to soak in, Method’s Pink Graprefruit All Purpose Cleaner can clean a surface fairly well; you simple spray, leave for a few seconds, then wipe off (though it’s non toxic so it’s safe to leave on). It works well on cleaning surfaces that have light daily dirt, but heavier dried on dirt becomes a little bit more tricky. Small amounts of grease is easily removed but this is mostly because of the power of microfibre cloths used and thats about as far as it goes. I did try using the Method’s Pink Grapefruit All Purpose Cleaner in the shower, but was not pleased by its performance.  It didn’t do much to remove soap scum build-up nor did it do much for the general cleaning of the tub.

Overall Experience

Method’s Pink Grapefruit All Purpose Cleaner requires a good amount of elbow grease, but it’s worth the effort to be green. I’m not a fan on un-nessasery perfumes and dyes in products and also style over usability which appears to be exactly what Method prefer. It doesn’t make the product bad in anyway, however you end up paying extra for a product to be designed in a fashionable way which seems a waste of money when it’s simply a cleaning product.

Will I buy it again?

This was bought as a test product and it shall remain as one. There are far better alternatives that match our own ideas for green cleaning products. Method appear to be focused on bringing the cleaning products out from under the sink and onto the shelf (minimal label, the use of dyes and perfumes, the bottle design, etc) and this product is in keeping with their goals.

I’d reccomend it but only as it’s easily available in offline stores such as Homebase and Tesco which is rare for green cleaning products.

Cleaner Indoor Air this Autumn

It was a great October for the weather, we’ve been able to keep the windows open for a little longer and the heater off for a few extra weeks; unfortunately it’s almost the time when the house will be air tight again, leaving the indoor air pollution no way to escape. Here are some easy, simple things you can do to keep the air quality pure and safe in your house this autumn.

1154833112559_Autumn_sInvitationII2476FlAd001
  1. Dust your radiators. When the heater comes on, it isn’t good to smell fried dust (a slightly damp sock on a stick works best at removing all the dust and cobwebs)
  2. Check for odd objects in between your radiators. Plastic objects can find their way in between and behind the radiator (especially if you have kids), heating comes on, and next thing you know, you’re wondering why it smells like burning plastic.
  3. Clean your carpets. Get rid of dust, dust-mites and other noxious things so you won’t be inhaling them with every step you take. We recommend a professional carpet clean every six months, in spring to set you up for the summer, and once in Autumn to get rid of the summers dirt.
  4. Choose your candles wisely. One that shocked us when we first heard it is that a lot of candles can actually increase indoor air pollution. Petroleum-based and lead-wick candles contribute significantly so avoid these if you can. Instead buy (or even make) candles made from beeswax, soy, or vegetable oils, lead-free wicks, and pure essential-oil fragrances.
  5. Book an Autumn clean. Like a spring clean, an Autumn clean is designed to remove the build up of dirt from around the house that’s built up from the previous 6 months.

Surrey’s Greenest Cleaning Company

Why green you ask? Here’s our top 3 reasons why we chose to be green…

3. Green Cleaning is sustainable. We are told domestic pollution does more damage to the environment then industrial pollution so if choosing an organic product over one that isn’t helps reduce pollution then we are all for it.  Don’t be fooled though, we know that being green isn’t going to save the world; we simple see it as an extra bonus.

2. Green cleaning is on the rise. It’s obvious that non-toxic biodegrable cleaning is the way of the future as it’s popularity is increasing every day; because of this we want to be one of the leading cleaning companies that customers go to when they want experienced green cleaners. Green products are continuing to grow at a fantastic rate with new products announced regularily and we are forever testing and researching them to ensure our customers and employees gt the lasted green cleaning has to offer.

1. Our health. We have been cleaning for far too long to experience all the nasty chemical products that people use to do simple cleaning tasks. There is far better alternatives [have a look under the 'cleaning product reviews' category to find out our favorites] that can do almost any typical cleaning job around the house. Unfortunately there is still more chemical products that remove tough dirt far better then green cleaning products, but these should only be used as a last resort and in a controlled environment.

So there you have it, our top 3 reasons why we chose to be Surrey’s Greenest Cleaning Company.

Value for money?

If you have shopped around and got a few quotes you’d quickly find we aren’t always the cheapest option for either Domestic or Commercial cleaning services. There are ways we could reduce our prices to be more competive but is this a viable option for Green Clean Solution.

value_for_money

We believe a fair days pay is the best way to keep our green cleaners hard working, reliable and honest. Our cleaners respect each client as the client respects them and understands they deserve to earn good money for their hard, precise work, therefore reducing pay is not an option for us.

Something I have never understood is when reputable companies allow the client to supply the cleaning products. We have many years experience and have come to own a large collection of green products and tools that have made it possible for us to considerably reduce the time it takes to clean a house, allowing us to be far more competitive; letting the client chose and supply the products will be wasting our experience. They’d be spending more time and money going out buying the product at retail price and possibly buying the wrong ones that make the clean take longer. The cleaner could also end up with some odd unknown chemical product so this doesn’t really work for Green Clean Solution either.

For companies of our size I’d say we offer fairly competitive prices for our commercial customers. Larger companies typically pay a far smaller pay so they can offer a lower price but are notorious for being poorly managed. We pay a fair wage to our cleaners and in return our cleaners work that little bit harder to get the job done.

Although we could be more competitive with our prices by cutting a few corners here and there, as a result we’d be far less competitive with the cleaning services we provide, reducing the value of Green Clean Solution.
